Kiwis Save the Kiwi with Enviro NZ

For most New Zealanders, spotting a kiwi in the wild is a rare privilege. Yet the flightless bird remains one of the country’s most treasured national symbols and one that still needs protection. Enviro NZ has partnered with Save the Kiwi, the country’s leading kiwi conservation charity, as a top-tier sponsor of the “Kiwi on the Move” mission, involving an ongoing effort to relocate the species to safer areas.

Thousands of years ago, kiwis populated New Zealand in their millions. However, kiwi numbers have faced a drastic decline in recent decades, with populations shrinking from 70,000 to 65,000 between 2000 and 2026, sounding alarms among environmental conservationists.

Enviro NZ employees have volunteered to work with the local charity to help transport birds to promising new habitats where they will ideally flourish and grow their populations. The experience offered employees a rare opportunity to come face-to-face with the country’s beloved national bird while gaining a deeper appreciation of the challenges facing New Zealand's native wildlife.

Through this experience, employees were reminded of the importance of protecting not just the kiwi, but all New Zealand wildlife facing detrimental levels of environmental damage due to widespread deforestation and the introduction of invasive species in their natural habitat.

Thanks to this initiative, over 600 kiwis have been moved to habitats where they can flourish with a lower risk of exposure to human activity and predators. Beyond waste services, Enviro NZ has made it a part of their mission to support and promote organisations safeguarding the future of New Zealand’s wildlife.
