Northumbrian Water’s groundbreaking sewer robot, Pipebot Patrol, has made its television debut. EDL Energy has acquired GWE Biogas, including the Sandhill Biogas Plant in East Yorkshire, one of the UK’s most advanced anaerobic digestion facilities. Since 2011, Sandhill has churned out biomethane for the gas grid, powering 6,000 homes and capturing 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ on an annual basis – all from food and farm waste that might have otherwise clogged landfills. With this extra boost in EDL's electrical generation capacity, the deal empowers EDL to scale up cleaner energy for local industry and feed excess clean power to the national grid.  

HUTCHMED has started a global clinical trial for HMPL-A251, a first-in-class Antibody-Targeted Therapy Conjugate (“ATTC”) from its next-generation platform, with the potential to transform treatment for patients with solid tumours. Unlike traditional toxin-based treatments that often cause harsh systemic side effects, HUTCHMED’s ATTC combines an antibody with a targeted blocker to deliver dual mechanisms of action directly into cancer cells, thereby improving efficacy while enhancing safety.

HK Electric has tapped long‑time partner Taihei Dengyo Kaisha Ltd to install its new gas‑fired generating unit at Lamma Power Station, due to be commissioned by 2029. This latest chapter is estimated to lift gas-fired generation from the current level of around 69% to about 80%, while slashing CO₂ emissions by 35 million metric tonnes – roughly what 50 million trees absorb each year. In addition, the new unit incorporates flood protection measures, marking a significant step in Hong Kong’s shift to cleaner energy and carbon neutrality by 2050.

Northumbrian Water is spending £26.9 million to upgrade sewage treatment at several sites in County Durham, located in the North East of England. This endeavour involves stripping phosphorus from wastewater, protecting the water quality in the River Wear. Work began in early 2026, with completion expected in 12 to 18 months. £44.1 million will also be spent to cut storm overflows as part of an overarching £1.7 billion environmental conservation mission taking place between 2025 to 2030.

Cenovus Energy is firing on all cylinders as a record-setting quarter preceded its acquisition of MEG Energy, a Canadian oil producer. The UK’s hydrogen ambitions have been boosted by funding of £96 million approved by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) for East Coast Hydrogen. Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) has just signed its first biomethane connection deal, linking the Delorean Corporation’s upcoming SA1 Salisbury Bioenergy facility to South Australia’s gas network. The project will bring up to 210 terajoules of renewable gas generated from organic waste into existing pipelines annually with no system overhaul needed. It’s proving that biomethane is ready for primetime and can contribute to AGIG’s ambition to deliver 100% renewable or carbon-neutral gas in its distribution networks by 2050.

Northumbrian Water has pumped £4.4 million into three environmental projects to reduce sewer overflows in England’s County Durham. The upgrades are part of major work across North East England and include new tanks, sewer diversions and separating surface water from wastewater pipes – key moves to prevent stormwater from overwhelming the system. The upgrades are expected to cut spills from these assets into the River Wear by over 75%, capping them at just 10 per year per site. CK Life Sciences (CKLS) has filed an Original Grant Patent application in Hong Kong and a provisional patent application in the US for its novel cancer vaccines targeting TROP2.

In preclinical studies, the TROP2 cancer vaccines have demonstrated impressive tumor growth inhibition in triple-negative breast cancer (“TNBC”) and colorectal cancer. The results of animal studies involving TNBC have been encouraging, with mouse models showing 100% tumor growth inhibition after receiving the TROP2 cancer vaccine.

CKLS looks forward to advancing its TROP2 cancer vaccine expeditiously into clinical trials to benefit patients and believes it holds significant potential in preventing cancer recurrence.

UK Power Networks is pioneering green energy adoption on the River Thames. Through its “Electric Thames” initiative, the company is charting a low-carbon future for London’s maritime sector by exploring electric vessel adoption, grid upgrades and vessel-to-grid technology, where boats double as floating batteries. In partnership with the Port of London Authority, Marine Zero and others, the project has analysed 62 commercial vessels and identified 21 riverside charging hotspots. HUTCHMED’s ORPATHYS® (savolitinib) has been approved by the China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) as a treatment for locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with MET ex14 skipping alteration. In a large clinical trial, ORPATHYS® showed strong results, helping more than 60% of first-time patients see their tumours shrink. Even those who had previously tried other treatments saw positive effects.

This game-changing machine is expected to cut annual emissions by 260 tonnes of CO2e – all while running on 100% renewable electricity. It is part of BEST’s ambitious plan to slash emissions by 80% by 2030 and reach net zero before 2040. BEST has also connected its first container ship to 100% green electricity via an On Shore Power Supply (OPS) system – another first for Southern Europe. BEST is undeniably plugged in to the future.  

Ookla has crowned 3 as Ireland’s fastest mobile network for the fifth year in a row. For the fourth consecutive year, it also took the title of Ireland’s fastest 5G network. In addition to this winning streak, 3 Ireland was recognised as the most consistent 5G network in the country.

HK Electric is stepping up its decarbonisation efforts with an enhanced Energy-efficient Community Subsidy Programme in 2025. The initiative will offer up to HK$3 million per building to support non-profit non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and schools in improving energy efficiency and adopting renewable energy solutions, thus leading to cost savings as well as carbon reduction.

The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Fong Shu Chuen Social Service Building was among the first batch of beneficiaries of the enhanced programme, which is expected to save 400,000kWh annually for the building upon completion.  

The world’s first trans-oceanic liquid hydrogen shipment has arrived at Hutchison Ports Yantian and is a resounding success. After travelling over 10,000 nautical miles from Rotterdam, the groundbreaking voyage culminated at Yantian. This journey is the first of its kind and proves that the greening of ports’ operations is beyond aspiration – it’s a reality.

Yantian was able to make this step towards more sustainable maritime innovation thanks to the support from Yantian Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) and Dapeng Customs. As the global push for clean energy accelerates, this milestone highlights the potential of hydrogen as a viable fuel source for the future of shipping.  

UK Power Networks (UKPN) is supercharging London’s electric bus revolution with a £4 million investment in the Thornton Heath district. The company has installed 5km of high-voltage underground cables and upgraded a local electricity substation. This will enable Arriva to roll out 109 electric buses from its Whitehall Road depot, thus delivering essential new power infrastructure to bus fleets and motorway service areas through the installation of rapid charging hubs.

This project is part of a broader effort to decarbonise transport, supporting cleaner air and lower carbon emissions, and accelerating the country’s transition to net zero.

Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) has broken monumental new ground in advancing Albury-Wodonga’s transition to sustainable energy. Construction has officially begun on Hydrogen Park Murray Valley (HyP Murray Valley), a A$65 million renewable hydrogen project.

Backed by funding from the Australian and Victorian governments, the project will feature a 10-megawatt electrolyser – the largest on Australia’s east coast – at launch. It will generate up to 500 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.

CK Life Sciences’ wholly-owned subsidiary, Vancouver-based WEX Pharmaceuticals, has merged with Nasdaq-listed Virios Therapeutics. The new company is called Dogwood Therapeutics (NASDAQ: DWTX). The merger enables WEX to tap into the US capital markets and to benefit from a strong management team to accelerate the development of its lead product, Halneuron®, for treatment of moderate-to-severe pain conditions caused by cancer and chemotherapy. CKLS now owns 15.9% of the common shares of the combined venture, plus a series of convertible preferred shares, which upon conversion will make CKLS the majority shareholder.

WINDTRE has just wrapped up its acquisition of OpNet, the first operator in Europe to build a national standalone 5G network. With this move, WINDTRE plans to offer next-gen 5G and fixed wireless access (FWA) services, helping businesses and public administrations to accelerate their digital transformation.

Northumbrian Water (NWG) is investing £20 million into a first-of-its-kind project in the UK that will develop smart sewers and other savvy technology, such as smart sensors and AI analytics, to reduce the risk of spills from storm overflows. Using techniques already successfully trialled in the US, NWG will have the power to control wastewater direction and flow, therefore reducing the risk of spills. Ten years of testing across the pond have shown an 80% decrease in spills in a section of an Indiana wastewater network, so with this new plan, NWG hopes to see similar results.

HK Electric, State Grid Corporation of China, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Xi’an Jiaotong University have extended their collaborative programme “Belt and Road Advanced Programme in Power and Energy” for another four years. Ongoing since 2018, this renewed partnership aims to drive efficiency and innovation in the power sector while conducting on-site research in Belt and Road regions. With hundreds of professionals trained worldwide, the programme will continue to offer cutting-edge seminars and tours to power plants and research centres, facilitating exchange of views and experience-sharing among the engineering practitioners.  

Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong (HTHK) continues to boost 5G network capacity, ensuring seamless connectivity for 3 Hong Kong and SUPREME customers. In the first half of the year, HTHK became the first operator in Hong Kong to complete 5G enhancements at three road harbour crossings. This further extends the “Golden Spectrum” to these high-traffic public transport infrastructures, enabling customers to experience flawless ultra-high definition streaming even in congested areas at peak hours.

Additionally, HTHK was one of the leading operators to upgrade its 5G services at Hong Kong International Airport and major event venues including AsiaWorld-Expo, the Central Harbourfront and the Hong Kong Coliseum, allowing visitors to enjoy uninterrupted social media access. HTHK remains committed to expanding network capacity across key infrastructures to meet the city’s growing demand.  

Hutchison Ports Jazan has surpassed one million tonnes of cargo handled since its port’s launch in September 2022. Over four days, the port completed the handling of a pig iron export vessel and an import vessel containing ilmenite (the main source of titanium dioxide).

Considering its strategic location in the Red Sea, the Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries (JCPDI) Port in Jazan is becoming a “port of choice” for regular berthing of Panamax bulk vessels carrying barley, for example. The port also welcomes steel billet carrying vessels and handles the import and transhipment of other project cargo.

This accomplishment underscores Hutchison Ports Jazan’s significant role in the region’s industrial development and its ability to efficiently manage key cargo operations. Beyond this achievement, the port continues its commitment to operational excellence and its vital contribution to the local economy and infrastructure.

Australian Gas Networks (AGN) reached two significant milestones at the tail end of August. It’s been 25 years since CKI made its first offshore investment in Envestra (now known as AGN) as one of its major shareholders, and 10 years since CKI acquired full ownership of the business. To celebrate, CKI and Australian Gas Infrastructure Group employees gathered at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide. They honoured the dedication and contributions of those who have been part of the company since it joined the CKI family, recognising their roles in shaping AGN’s growth and success as a key player in Australia’s gas network industry.

HUTCHMED’s FRUZAQLA® (fruquintinib) has secured approval in the European Union, UK and Switzerland to treat patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). This is a significant advancement in the treatment of CRC and means that patients have a new option to receive oral targeted therapy if chemotherapy and other treatments fail.

In Japan, regulators have given the green light to Takeda, HUTCHMED’s partner, to manufacture and market FRUZAQLA® for patients with previously treated metastatic CRC. FRUZAQLA® is the first novel targeted therapy in Japan to be approved for CRC in over a decade.  

3 Denmark has achieved impressive growth in the second quarter of 2024, bringing it even closer to becoming the second largest telecoms provider in Denmark. During this successful period, 3 saw 19,000 new customers, raising its total customer base to 1.627 million and a total increase of approximately 38,000 customers in the first half of the year.

Revenue in 2024’s second quarter reached DKK 670 million, while growth in the business segment saw service revenue rising 4% year-on-year to DKK 511 million.  

Hutchison Ports Yantian has celebrated a landmark achievement in its green port initiatives. In the first seven months of this year, Yantian surpassed last year’s totals, hitting new records in shore power supply. July alone saw a record 2.4 million kWh of electricity provided, while the January–July period saw a staggering 13.07 million kWh, doubling last year’s figure over the same period and exceeding the 12.44 million kWh total for 2023. This impressive output reduced carbon emissions by 10,117 tonnes – equivalent to planting approximately 560,000 trees. Providing clean shore power reduces emissions from ships burning fossil fuels when berthing. Furthermore, Yantian reached 626 shore power connections, doubling that of the same period last year and surpassing the previous year’s total of 595. These milestones underscore Yantian’s commitment to sustainable maritime operations and environmental stewardship.  

AS Watson has ramped up its global sustainability efforts by transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) in its delivery fleet and launching waste reduction initiatives to combat climate change. Currently, 60% of its 12 retail brands have adopted EVs for warehouse-to-store and online order deliveries. Cenovus Energy’s Asia Pacific team is marking a decade of successful operations at the Liwan gas project, the first deepwater gas venture in offshore China. Located southeast of Hong Kong, Liwan has delivered around 1,256 billion cubic feet of gas to date since kicking off production in March 2014. Last year, the Liwan 3-1 field hit a major milestone, surpassing one trillion standard cubic feet in gas sales.

Hongkong Salvage & Towage Services Limited (HKSTS) has celebrated the commissioning of LNG SENTINEL I and LNG SENTINEL II, the first two locally licensed liquified natural gas (LNG)-diesel dual-fuel tugs. These advanced tugs are set to safeguard the world’s largest floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) and the Hong Kong Offshore LNG Terminal. This move marks a significant leap towards greener maritime operations, showcasing Hong Kong’s dedication to sustainability and innovation. The LNG Sentinels will ensure safe and efficient terminal operations, reinforcing the city’s LNG infrastructure development.

In a promising start to the year, 3 Denmark saw significant customer growth, driven largely by a surge in internet subscribers. UK Power Networks Services, the private networks business of UK Power Networks, has acquired UU Solar, a major provider of renewable energy, including solar and much more, for an enterprise value of £90.8 million. UU Solar owns and operates 65 solar photovoltaic farms, four onshore wind facilities and one hydro generation asset, with a total installed capacity of 68.7MW. The company has long-term agreements and profitable status, enabling it to expand its renewable energy generation in the future.

While much of the energy generated today goes to United Utilities Water Limited, a regulated UK water and sewerage company, UK Power Networks Services can leverage their UK-wide water, electricity and other critical infrastructure asset portfolios to create synergy between UU Solar and their other businesses.

SA Power Networks has teamed up with Carbonix to conduct the first-ever long-range drone patrol of electricity power lines in Australia. HK Electric has announced its decision to construct another new gas-fired generation unit at Lamma Power Station. The new generation unit, L13, will be manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd in Japan, marking a pivotal step towards the company’s net-zero goals. The unit, now in development, is slated for commissioning in 2029 and promises to push carbon emission reduction during the transition to alternative forms of electricity.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) and a number of heavyweight industry partners have secured nearly £500,000 in Ofgem funding for its Hydrogen Cost Reduction Programme (HyCoRe), which will explore hydrogen’s role in easing the upfront investment needed to achieve net zero in the UK.

Joined by industry giants such as Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, Kinewell Energy and Arup, NGN will delve into hydrogen integration with existing energy networks in a series of projects that have already garnered over £16 million in Ofgem funding.

The six-month HyCoRe project will focus on national modelling, regional solution modelling and technical challenge assessment, aiming to pave the way for green hydrogen integration into the gas network.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has received £300,000 in innovation funding for two studies that would research transitioning to net zero in the UK.

The first project, PATCH (Production and Long-Term Containment of Hydrides), explores alternative hydrogen storage media, while the Regional Energy Strategic Modelling project (RESM) focuses on optimising gas, water and power networks simultaneously, to support low-carbon infrastructure.

Funded by energy network users and consumers (through the Strategic Innovation Fund, SIF), the projects aim at rapidly achieving net zero in the UK at minimal cost while maximising benefits to networks and consumers.

UK Power Networks (UKPN) has secured funding for 12 pioneering projects as part of its initiatives to propel innovation in electricity and net-zero efforts. Now in their discovery phase under Ofgem and Innovate UK’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), these initiatives have the objective of fast-tracking net-zero plans, fortifying network resilience and lowering costs.

Partnering with over 20 leading innovators, the projects include endeavours such as electric-powered boats and heat capture from waste. UKPN is enthusiastic about the projects’ potential to revolutionise its operations and communities.

So far, UKPN has managed to seamlessly integrate 58 projects into its workflow. This has resulted in £425 million in customer savings, which is a testament to the company’s mission to deliver tangible benefits through strategic collaboration.

HK Electric co-hosted an opening ceremony for the city’s first offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal with its project partner, CLP Power. The supply of low-carbon LNG to Hong Kong’s electricity generation and distribution companies will help the city in its transition to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The project was the collective success of business partners, marine experts, engineers, technicians, construction workers and other colleagues from the two power companies. The city has also benefited from the Hong Kong SAR Government’s environmental policies that have facilitated the construction of this complex but important infrastructure.  

3 Denmark defied all the experts who predicted that their 3G network company, launched in 2003 with precisely zero customers, was doomed to failure. Twenty years on, they are celebrating serving over 1.5 million personal and business Danish customers. They took over 11,000 of them from the competition in Q3 alone.

As if that wasn’t enough, their 5G network was named the “Most Consistent/Best Network Overall” in Denmark by telecommunications analysis agency Opensignal. They also came out on top for accessibility and upload and download speeds for a 5G network in Denmark.

Hutchison Ports Duisburg celebrated its Ruby anniversary in September in style. Forty years ago, DeCeTe Duisburg opened its doors to strengthen the trading capacity of the German Ruhr industrial heartland with seaborne linkages to the world. Rail and barge connections to the open sea are part of the trimodal model that serves shipping lines, logistics service providers, shippers and operators with distinction.  

Those suffering from metastatic colorectal cancer will soon have another option that could improve their survival rates and extend their lives. HUTCHMED’s partner, global pharmaceutical firm Takeda, has obtained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to make FRUZAQLA™ (fruquintinib) available on the US market.

The drug has been approved for use in patients as part of a treatment protocol that gives them another chance when other treatments such as chemotherapy have proven ineffective. The development partnership with Takeda is part of a broader global partnership strategy. Achieving this watershed will trigger the delivery of sales royalties as well as a milestone payment as part of a deal that will total up to US$1.13 billion.  

Scientists are making incredible progress in using vaccines to combat cancer, bringing hope for improved cancer treatments in the future. Researchers at CK Life Sciences are developing vaccines that can slow down the growth and spread of cancer or prevent its recurrence after surgery.

One of their promising vaccines targets two proteins, PD-L1 (programmed death ligand 1) and PRAME (preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma), which are involved in promoting cancer. Normally, the immune system uses T cells to attack cancer cells, but PD-L1 puts the brakes on T cells, preventing them from doing their job. PRAME, on the other hand, promotes cancer cell growth and spread.

CK Life Science’s PD-L1/PRAME dual-targeting vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce T cells that can specifically kill cancer cells that have PD-L1 and/or PRAME. It also triggers the production of antibodies that can block PD-L1, allowing the T cells to attack cancer cells more effectively. Additionally, antibodies against PRAME further enhance the killing of cancer cells.

CK Life Sciences presented their innovative research on this vaccine at the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) 2023 Annual Meeting in San Diego, showcasing its potential for treating liver cancer.

Hydrogen is the future of Queensland, and Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) is building that future. Construction has started on Hydrogen Park (HyP) Gladstone, located on Australia’s northeast coast. The plant will enable AGIG to introduce a 10% blend of renewable hydrogen into the natural gas currently used by homes and businesses. The renewable hydrogen burns clean with no carbon emissions and can be increased as a percentage of the flow over time. Around 770 homes and businesses will be online by early 2024 – and as the project reaches its full potential, it will save over 57 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere each year.  

3 UK has completed the construction of over 100 sites to help bring its national geographic 4G coverage to 90% of the country and to hit 95% coverage by all UK mobile network operators by 2026.

The Shared Rural Network (SRN) is a £1 billion programme supported by the mobile industry and the UK government that aims to improve connectivity in the UK’s most rural locations. Sixty-five of 3’s 100 SRN sites have been deployed across Scotland, providing coverage for 12,500 premises across nearly 2,000 square kilometres of the UK’s most remote locations.  

ESDlife’s WeVow lit a fire at the Spark Awards 2023 to win two Gold awards for “Best Promotion Strategy” and “Best Use of Mobile/App”. WeVow is a wedding app that uses AI and data analyses to make life easier for stressed-out couples working on making their big day the best day.

WeVow and a staff engagement app, We+, along with various client projects, have racked up the awards all year long, including the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing Triple Crown Award. The completion of works to dramatically deepen berths 8 and 9 at Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe has cleared the way for even bigger ships to call at the port. The OOCL Felixstowe, a massive 24,188 TEU mega container vessel operated by Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd (“OOCL”), came on 4 October 2023 to be part of the official announcement of completion. Felixstowe now provides levels of access that are unequalled anywhere else in the UK, increasing the berthing windows for the biggest vessels and the number of ultra-large vessels that can enter or leave the port on each high tide.  

HK Electric has introduced a powerful, mobile electricity-generating unit that can step in to provide a green supply in case of an emergency. It is a two-truck system that could also be deployed as a backup power source for major events. It can provide up to two hours of continuous power supply for more than 650 households. In Hong Kong, it debuted at the FIA World Rallycross Championship in autumn 2023.

The innovative system’s dual-pronged approach features an energy storage truck and a power changeover truck that allows an uninterrupted power supply. Batteries are replacing traditional diesel systems – they are quieter and greener in operation.  

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has won the Gold award of the Stevie International Business Award 2023 in the HR Department of the Year category. The award specifically recognises the success of the company’s post-merger management and enhancement of human resources.

The use of technology such as Robotic Process Automation by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison was particularly noted and how this was combined with a human touch that respected culture and honoured their staff. Hutchison Ports BEST in Barcelona now has a direct rail connection service to Toulouse in France, more than 400km by rail. There are three weekly trains that can carry 108 TEU to reduce transit time for shippers. SA Power Networks’ “Flexible Exports” project has won the Australian Institute of Energy’s SA Energy Project of the Year Award 2023. The award is offered to the most significant and successful energy-related project, such as research, policy, legal, commercial, engineering and construction, over the past 12 months.

SA Power Networks engaged with more than 6,000 national and international stakeholders to successfully develop and deploy Flexible Exports, which allow solar customers to export up to 10kW of energy depending on grid capacity at the time. It’s a game-changer for both the industry and customers alike who now have an even bigger stake in producing zero-emission energy.  

3 Sweden has gone big by investing in the bandwidth it will need to best serve its customers. It has purchased 1.2 billion SEK (>US$115 million) to secure the spectrum needed for the next 25 years of telecommunications service in the 5G era and beyond. This retains the use of the mid-band spectrum as well as the lower band spectrum for future use.

Lake Superior is the greatest of the Great Lakes, the huge inland freshwater oceans that stretch into the heart of North America. They are a vital waterway, and at their western extremity lies the Duluth Marine Terminal, fuelled and operated by the Cenovus Superior Refinery. This crucial gateway brings goods into the American heartland at the border of two states, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Freight moved by water is one of the most energy-efficient forms of transport. The terminal also serves as a major refuelling port for ships carrying essential products such as limestone, grain, cement, salt, wind turbines and other cargo. It provides economic support as a transit port for the region and as a local employer is a vital part of the mid-West economy.

Telecom giants Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and China Mobile International have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to accelerate innovation specifically in communications, data centres and infrastructure technology. The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation to collaborate to deliver innovative and competitive digital solutions to better serve global customers.

The agreement will help them not only in their home markets but also in expanding into other markets in the region. They hope to help create an intelligent digital ecosystem in the region, integrating technology, capital and industry to strengthen regional economic cooperation and provide a digital innovation platform for regional prosperity.  

Global sustainable energy producer EDL and key project stakeholders Republic Services, NW Natural Renewables and Pennant Midwest have commenced operations at the Limestone Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility near Youngstown, Ohio, USA.

EDL has upgraded an existing landfill gas-to-energy power plant to an RNG facility near Republic Services’ Carbon Limestone Landfill.

This new facility is helping to tackle the issue of carbon-heavy landfill gas (LFG) that typically escapes into the atmosphere due to the decomposition of rubbish. The LFG is processed and conditioned into pipeline-quality RNG – reducing harmful emissions and providing a reliable source of green energy for local residents and businesses.

The Limestone RNG facility is designed to produce 1.7 million MMBtu (million British thermal units) of RNG in 2024 – comparable to removing the emissions from 13,170 passenger vehicles from roads each year.  

Wales & West Utilities have partnered with ARUP, a global engineering consultant, to produce a report to explore how hydrogen could transform the aviation sector across their region. Hydrogen in Aviation explores how hydrogen could be used at airports in Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and Newquay.

The report also helps potential users and suppliers to make practical plans to incorporate hydrogen into their operations. Pipeline builders can use the report to plan infrastructure changes and support the advancement of the hydrogen economy. This is an exciting first step in decarbonising our air travel.  

Electric Picnic is Ireland’s biggest music festival and it is powered by 3 Ireland! Hutchison Ports has invested US$700 million in the development of a new container terminal in Ain Sokhna Port and the Port of Alexandria, bringing Hutchison Ports’ total investment in Egypt to over US$1.5 billion.

The new container terminal in Ain Sokhna Port will have a capacity of 1.7 million TEU, providing a significant boost to Egypt’s maritime trade. The B100 container terminal will provide a new gateway to the Port of Alexandria, a key hub for trade between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Enerven is taking on its biggest project to date after winning a landmark contract to construct a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for Origin Energy at their Eraring Power Station in New South Wales. Enerven’s expertise in high-voltage and renewable energy was crucial in securing the right to build the 460MW battery – among the largest in Australia. The A$600 million investment will enable renewable energy to be stored and dispatched during peak demand, supporting grid stability and energy security as well as creating up to 128 construction jobs and 10 operational jobs.

HUTCHMED has passed key milestones to be accepted for review for use in the US and Europe. The fruquintinib New Drug Application has been accepted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has also granted priority review, with the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date set for 30 November 2023. The Market Authorization Application in Europe has also been validated and accepted for regulator review by the European Medicines Agency. Results of the Phase III FRESCO‑2, a key study that supported the regulatory submissions, were published in The Lancet, one of the world’s most prestigious and well-respected medical journals.  

The world’s biggest towage company, Boluda Towage, has invested in Hongkong Salvage and Towage Services Limited (HKSTS). The deal will enable Boluda to expand into Asia, bring its capital and share its best practice to enhance HKSTS’ service offering to clients in Hong Kong.

K-pop, K-film and K-beauty have taken Asia and the world by storm. A.S. The two sectoral giants signed an agreement in Seoul to expand the reach of Amorepacific Group’s brands and bring more innovative products to the customers.  

HK Electric and its partner, CLP Power, have opened their liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to receive LNG for power generation. This offshore terminal features the world’s largest Floating Storage and Regasification Unit vessel, the Bauhinia Spirit, with an LNG storage capacity of 263,000m³. The LNG is stored onboard the Bauhinia Spirit until it is regasified and sent on to the two power stations including HK Electric’s, contributing to the green energy transition in Hong Kong.  

The global organisation representing all offline and online retail, the National Retail Federation, has teamed up with research firm Kantar to recognise the world’s most influential retailers. Cracking the top 20 is A.S. Watson in sixteenth place, which is recognised for its domestic and international retail revenue success. CK Life Sciences’ Dominion Salt has been a pioneer and industry leader in providing high-quality salt products to customers worldwide for the past seven and a half decades. The Shanghai Pudong International Container Terminal (SPICT) marked an important milestone as it moved its 50 millionth container. Hutchison Ports staff were joined by contractors and friends to mark this special event in SPICT’s history.

Rossmann is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary in Poland with a facelift for a special location. The Rossmann store located at Złote Tarasy is all about new experiences for customers which include a new health zone, a beauty zone and a self-checkout area. Rossmann has approximately 1,600 outlets in Poland from its over 4,500 stores across 8 markets in Europe. Gratulacje!  

Hydrogen Park South Australia (HyP SA) has ramped up the supply of hydrogen to customers in South Australia. In May 2023, the current 700 customers ballooned to 4,000 homes and businesses in Mitchell Park, Clovelly Park and parts of Marion. Happy customers over the past two years of HyP SA’s operation merit the expansion of the platform that produces hydrogen and then adds it to natural gas flows to customers. HyP SA currently has Australia’s biggest electrolyser to create stored hydrogen power and will hold that title until the next wave of projects come online, including Australian Gas Infrastructure Group’s 10MW HyP Murray Valley project, in mid-2025.  

WINDTRE has acquired 70% of RAD, an Italian cybersecurity firm that serves large and small enterprises. This will help WINDTRE in their objective to offer increasingly advanced and diversified services in the B2B sector to support the digitisation of businesses and public administrations.

Hutchison Ports is constantly making major capital expenditure (CapEx) investments to create safer, greener and more efficient operations at its ports. Hutchison Ports Thailand is beefing up its electric vehicle (EV) fleet and welcomed nine new autonomous trucks that deliver on efficiency and the environment at Terminal D, Laem Chabang Port.

Hutchison Ports HIT in Hong Kong launched the city’s first quay cranes equipped with solar panels on top of the machinery house. It is also expanding its fleet of remote control rail-mounted gantry cranes. Hutchison Ports Pakistan is also investing in new electric remote control quay cranes and remote control rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RCRTGCs).

Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe has taken delivery of the first six of seventeen semi-automated remote control electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RCRTGs) as part of its upgrade path. It has also signed a deal for 100 new autonomous trucks – all EVs. New EVs in ports around the world will result in quieter, safer and cleaner yards for staff, from Hong Kong to the UK.

In alignment with A.S. Watson’s Greener Store Global Framework, Superdrug plans to refit 70 existing stores this year by using environmentally friendly materials to replace its shop front, flooring and ceiling with biosoluble mineral, clay and starch. The new design will also improve energy conservation and waste management, and the signage will be fully recyclable.

In Malaysia, Watsons has launched its first greener store: the Tropika at Bukit Jalil. The store has over 700 sustainable choices products. They’re also piloting Watsons Malaysia’s first in-store recycling platform where customers can recycle packaging materials from products bought at Watsons.

Essex & Suffolk Water is investing £49.3 million in upgrades to its water treatment works at Barsham to bring clean water, clean living and a more resilient environment to over 75,000 people across a wide swathe of the region. A new reservoir will contain over 20 million litres of water. New pumps, filters and tanks, chemical dosing and plant-washing facilities will combine to ensure clean, fresh, great-tasting water.  

Hutchison Ports’ subsidiary, Colour Path Holdings, is on track to manage a dry port and bonded logistics zone at SPARK – the King Salman Energy Park. The new company will be called the Energy City Logistics Company (ECLC). A US$400 million logistics facility will provide support to the SPARK energy ecosystem by handling containers, breakbulk and project cargo while managing storage yards, warehousing and customs clearance. SPARK is a global energy hub and the new facility will cement its position as an energy logistics powerhouse sitting at a confluence of new rail and road links.

It is all Enviro NZ now! The constituent companies have been brought under the Enviro NZ brand. EnviroWaste, ChemWaste, EnviroEarth and the parent company Enviro NZ all now bear one moniker and look, simplifying and strengthening the brand in the public eye. Popular apps such as the EnviroEarth app will still work and will be updated with the new style in time. Enviro NZ employs around 1,100 New Zealanders who provide essential waste and recycling solutions for a third of all local councils, and more than half a million business and household customers.

Hutchison Ports KICT is installing solar panel energy systems to harness the power of the sun. KICT will expand its solar energy generation in the future, but the first iteration will save over 110 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere and generate 140,000KWh a year of energy.

Australian Gas Infrastructure Group is rolling out hydrogen production facilities in the HyPs: Hydrogen Parks. The next to come is Murray Valley. Construction is commencing soon on HyP Murray Valley and it’s expected to start producing in mid-2025. The HyP will create hydrogen that will be mixed into the existing natural gas supply to the homes of 40,000 customers in the Albury-Wodonga region. The 10MW electrolyser will have eight times the capacity of Australia’s current biggest operational electrolyser, eclipsing its production.  

Northern Gas Networks is about more than gas. It has secured support to conduct a 12-week study into the integration of offshore wind generation and electrolysis, especially the optimal placement of infrastructure, such as electrolysers and energy storage, to minimise the cost and maximise the resilience. The Hydrogen Cost Reduction (HyCoRe) programme is supported by the national energy regulator and development agency, OFGEM, through their Strategic Innovation Fund and has the participation of other energy companies including UK Power Networks.  

SA Power Networks is expanding its world-leading Flexible Exports programme, allowing customers to export more solar energy into the grid. Solar customers are able to export (i.e. sell) up to 10kW per phase from their rooftop solar panel systems, depending on network capacity. Successful trials have proven that customers could export the maximum 10kW allotment 98% of the time. Customers getting on board with the Flexible Exports programme not only earn a return on their rooftop solar investment but also contribute to a more sustainable and stable energy grid overall.  

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is commonly used as an insulator to protect against shock for high-voltage electrical systems – and has over 22,800 times the global warming potential (GWP) of carbon dioxide. UK Power Networks is installing its first SF6-free Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), which uses a combination of dehumidified oxygen and nitrogen that have a zero GWP. The company aims to reduce the use of SF6 for new switchgear across all voltage ranges where alternatives are available on the market. This will deliver operational efficiency, as SF6 management, training, reporting and disposal is costly and onerous, whereas the GIS is a safer, simpler platform.

Port of Yantian has become only the fourth port in the world to offer liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering. LNG bunkering refers to the practice of providing LNG to specially designed ships so that they power themselves with this much cleaner fossil fuel instead of dirtier traditional alternatives such as heavy fuel oil, marine diesel fuel and marine gas oil. The port launched its service by hosting the 23,000-TEU M/V CMA CGM SORBONNE, the world’s largest LNG-powered container ship.

A.S. Watson Benelux has opened a new 14,000 sqm distribution centre. The facility is powered by 14,000 solar panels, generating energy equivalent to that normally consumed by 2,000 households. This facility, the third in the region, reduces carbon consumption by placing the distribution centre closer to Kruidvat’s retail outlets. The centre’s new home in Oosterhout, the Netherlands, will provide employment for the surrounding communities, a win for all concerned.  

Artificial Intelligence (AI), carbon-neutral hydrogen heating boilers, low-pressure hydrogen storage innovations and other solutions are coming together as H2GO Power (“H2GO”) at Northern Gas Networks’ Low Thornley Test Facility in the UK to bring cleaner energy to the people. H2GO will be powered by solar photovoltaic (PV) panels using an AI-enabled optimisation software platform to ensure the most efficient use of renewable energy to distribute gas. The project is funded through the UK Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s £26 million Industrial Hydrogen Accelerator Programme to advance an end-to-end industrial fuel switch from natural gas to hydrogen.  

3 Denmark has signed up with a local startup, the 0-Mission, to replace the energy it consumes from the power grid with solar-generated electricity. It supports the 0-Mission’s privately funded solar park through a subscription that reduces its carbon footprint from electricity usage. Normally companies would have to undertake to build their own renewable energy capacity, a time-consuming process. Through this initiative, 3 Denmark can start to offset its environmental impact immediately, doing good now rather than later.

HUTCHMED has come to a licensing agreement with global pharmaceutical giant Takeda Pharmaceutical to further the global development, commercialisation and manufacture of fruquintinib outside of China. A US$400 million upfront payment and additional potential milestone payments could reach US$1.13 billion upon achieving regulatory, development and commercial sales milestones.  

From Austria to Ireland, Ookla says 3 beats the rest for speed. Ookla, the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis, presents its annual Speedtest awards every year. For the third year in a row, Drei Austria has been deemed the fastest 5G network in Austria. It celebrated with an ad campaign that treated German speakers to witty wordplay to highlight the win. 3 Ireland won its national contest for the fastest network for a fourth year in a row and the quickest 5G network for a third time.

Port of Felixstowe is the first in Europe to introduce autonomous terminal tractor units (ATs) into mixed traffic terminal operations. The battery-powered ATs will work alongside standard human-operated trucks. The units use digital maps, on-board GPS navigation systems to know where they are and LiDAR (laser imaging, detection and ranging) to “see” their surroundings, supported by their Extreme Precise Positioning (EPP) system that can position them within 2cm of accuracy. The ATs will be used initially at the port’s Trinity and North Rail terminals.  

Jabiru (Northern Territory, Australia) is home to EDL’s award-winning Jabiru Hybrid Renewable Project. This project has enabled the town to significantly reduce diesel use, with 100% solar energy produced during the day. Excess solar energy is stored for use after dark, enabling over 50% of total energy consumption to come from renewables. It also promotes equity by ensuring 99.9% energy reliability for all of Jabiru’s residents. Preventing 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere and promoting equity won the project the 2022 Asian Power Awards’ Solar Power Project of the Year – Australia!  

WINDTRE has partnered with iliad in a 50/50 joint venture to manage and accelerate mobile network coverage to people in rural areas in Italy. With relevant government ministry approvals in hand, they are poised to provide 5G and ultra-broadband services to 26.8% of Italians that live in these areas. The new joint venture is named Zefiro Net S.r.l. This is very appropriate for “Wind” Tre; zefiro in Italian means “zephyr” in English: a soft gentle breeze.

Shanghai Hutchison Pharmaceuticals has received approval from Health Canada to directly export their Danning Tablets to Canada. The product will be marketed as a licensed natural product in Canada under the brand name Biliflow. It marks not only a step forward for Shanghai Hutchison Pharmaceuticals but also the internationalisation and modernisation of traditional Chinese medicine.  

Canada has always been, and continues to be, a hot destination for immigrants. Cenovus Energy is supporting their resettlement with a C$450,000 grant to local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC). The city is home to over 400,000 immigrants and refugees and the strategic partnership with ISC will help direct immigrants to over 50 newcomer-serving partner organisations to help them with employment, education, health and more. Beyond the connection to services, the grant will also support the Immigrants of Distinction Awards gala that celebrates the contribution of immigrants to a strong and prosperous Canada.  

The city of Venlo, a Dutch logistics hotspot near the Netherlands–Germany border, celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding as a rail terminal in October 2022. It has also been a barge terminal for more than 10 years, providing around 30 weekly connections to Rotterdam and vice versa as well as to other locations. Hongkong United Dockyards had a decade head start on Venlo and celebrated its 50th anniversary with management from Hutchison Ports and HPH Trust.

Doubling even that impressive milestone, the Polish Port of Gdynia celebrated its 100th anniversary. On 23 September 1922, the Polish Parliament passed legislation to transform the fishing village of Gdynia into a modern port. The 2022 gala saw over 700 luminaries of government and business join former and current port staff at the Danuta Baduszkowa Music Theatre celebrating with the people of Gdynia and the whole nation.

Hutchison Ports Yantian now has 11 inland ports in Mainland China. It opened its 10th inland port in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province followed by Chenzhou, Hunan Province. The rail connection facility in Chenzhou is the third inland port operated by Hutchison Ports Yantian in the province. This network of inland ports has supported the rise of Hutchison Ports Yantian’s rail–sea throughput by 10% year-on-year.

HUTCHMED’s fruquintinib is now targeting second-line gastric cancer. A Phase III study, involving 703 patients, has shown a statistically significant impact in improving progression-free survival (PFS) when combined with another drug, paclitaxel. PFS is the length of time during and after the treatment of a disease wherein a patient lives with the disease but it does not get worse.

HUTCHMED has recently completed patient enrolment of ESLIM-01, the Phase III clinical trial of sovleplenib for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), an autoimmune disorder that can lead to increased risk of bleeding. ITP can often be serious and can have a significant, multifaceted impact on patients’ health and quality of life. Patients often become resistant to treatment over time and new treatment options are desperately needed. The drug has been granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for ITP in China. It is also being studied for use in indolent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple subtypes of B-cell malignancies.

WINDTRE is introducing a new service for customers with the relevant smartphones that allow them to make calls over WiFi. This is distinct from using voice over internet protocol (VOIP) calling through apps using WiFi. It allows for making emergency calls when there is no mobile radio coverage and improves execution time of the call. Users can call people normally on their phone numbers rather than having to depend on using a compatible app the recipient may or may not have. This service will have no fees associated with it and does not require the downloading of additional apps; it just works.

The HyLine Cymru pipeline is expected to stretch across south Wales, connecting customers to a clean-burning hydrogen option. He toured the port and Premier Li had supportive words for the Hutchison Ports leadership, encouraging them to establish themselves as a leading world-class port. The Port of Shenzhen is the world’s fourth biggest port by throughput and Hutchison Ports Yantian handles about 49.2% of the total throughput.

3 Hong Kong is leading among telco operators as the first to announce the activation of 700MHz band spectrum mobile phone base stations. This wavelength of spectrum allows for ultra-strong penetration providing 5G coverage. It means better coverage in both less densely populated rural areas and urban areas with intense building coverage. The base stations were activated at midnight on 30 June to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997.  

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is at the forefront of the extensive research, planning and testing needed to ensure that hydrogen can be used safely and efficiently in the UK gas network. The pilot HyDeploy project saw 668 homes in Winlaton, Gateshead receive an 80:20 gas–hydrogen blend to heat their homes and for use in their appliances, in a 10-month demonstration that concluded in June.

NGN has also received permission from the regulator Ofgem to plan for a two-year hydrogen test-run of home hydrogen use in Redcar, Teesside. If investment and the final green light are forthcoming, up to 2,000 homes and businesses will receive locally produced green hydrogen. It will see boilers designed for 100% hydrogen used as part of the attempt to create a complete “hydrogen village”.  

A.S. Watson’s drive to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has seen it beat its targets set in 2015. It was aiming for a 40% reduction by 2030, but in 2021, it hit 42%. The target has been reset to a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, using 2018 as the stricter baseline. It also aims to have 33% of its suppliers committed to science-based targets for GHG emissions reduction by 2027. A.S. Watson is aiming to meet its goals and then set higher ones. Onwards and downwards for GHG emissions!  

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison is creating a joint venture with PT Aplikanusa Lintasarta and BDX Asia Data Center Holdings to deliver 21st-century data services to the people of Indonesia. The three companies will establish a hyperscale data centre business to address the ever-growing demand for global standard data centres in Indonesia. The US$300 million investment will provide cloud services to the fast-growing online business sector. Customers will have access to cloud services in Indonesia and across the Asia-Pacific.

Patient access to novel treatments just got easier in parts of China. HUTCHMED’s surufatinib (SULANDA® in China) has been approved in the Macau Special Administrative Region. This drug has benefited over 12,000 patients with neuroendocrine tumours in China.

HUTCHMED’s first in-licensed product tazemetostat (TAZVERIK®) has been approved for use in Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone under the Clinically Urgently Needed Imported Drugs scheme. TAZVERIK® is a first-in-class EZH2 inhibitor that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of certain patients with follicular lymphoma and advanced epithelioid sarcoma, a type of blood cancer and soft-tissue cancer, respectively.

UK Power Networks is investing over £100 million of infrastructure in London and the East and South East of England. Over 100 projects will see upgrades of substations, transformers and circuit breakers to support more than 8.4 million homes and businesses. Of the total investment amount, £66 million will be dedicated to Green Recovery scheme projects that will fast-track low carbon at 86 sites, advancing the nation to hit targets set out in the government’s Ten Point Plan towards Net Zero by 2050.

GAMECO, operating out of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport since 1989, has signed two major agreements with the world-leading aircraft manufacturer, Boeing. A five-year contract will see them cooperate on the first integrated materials management partnership in Mainland China. Boeing will provide demand planning, on-site personnel and logistics services to support GAMECO’s operations to optimise materials purchase and inventory costs.

The other agreement will see the firms work together to expand their cooperation to convert passenger aircraft to freighters to match growing demand for cargo capacity, with B737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCFs) and B767-300 BCFs being adapted. In fact, GAMECO just celebrated re-delivery of the first Boeing B767-300 BCF in Mainland China last month. Boeing forecasts demand for over 1,720 freighter conversions in the next 20 years.  

Hutchison Ports is expanding its cooperation with the Egyptian government by signing concession agreements to operate two new terminals in Ain Sokhna Port and El Dekheila Port. Ain Sokhna is on the Red Sea, while El Dekheila is part of the Alexandria metro area on the Mediterranean Sea. The signing ceremony was hosted by the prime minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouly, and the transport minister of Egypt, Kamel Al-Wazir.

EnviroNZ sees New Zealand as a nation of committed recyclers. The company is supporting the country’s commitment with its new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Timaru, South Island. The new MRF can process up to 5 tonnes of mixed plastics, aluminium, steel, paper and cardboard every hour. Materials are recovered for reuse and are kept out of landfill.

Mr Victor TK Li, Chairman of CK Group, was bestowed the honour of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy by the President of the Italian Republic, H.E. The British energy regulator, Ofgem, has bestowed £500,000 on Northern Gas Networks (NGN) for five projects that will help the UK on their journey to building a net-zero economy. Projects range from supporting a rail decarbonisation strategy to the use of hydrogen in heavy duty transport. In another project, robots using thermal imagery can assess pressure conditions in pipes to reduce methane leakage. Residential energy efficiency and generating power from gas flow round out the five fabulous projects.

Hongkong United Dockyards Limited (HUD) held a steel-cutting ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of Hong Kong’s first-ever dual fuel standby vessels. The dual fuel vessels run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and marine gas oil. Harmful particulates used in traditional ships will be reduced by 80% by using this innovative vessel. They will support the operations of the first offshore LNG terminal in Hong Kong that will enable the city to be powered by cleaner fuel. Cleaner ships and cleaner power plants are a double win for Hong Kong!

5G is powering an Internet of Things (IoT) revolution at the Port of Felixstowe. The first phase will see IoT used for two major initiatives: the predictive maintenance of quay cranes and communications for remote control yard cranes. The £200 million investment in 5G deployment will deliver a range of efficiencies, starting with improving maintenance priorities as IoT devices monitor heavy equipment in real time.  

Hutchison Ports Tanzania has broken its own throughput record yet again! The port celebrated an impressive increase to more than 60,000 TEU in March 2022. Specifically, the new record of 61,237 TEU was an 18.4% increase over their previous record set in September 2020.

There is plenty of sun in Oman and Hutchison Ports Sohar is harnessing its power for its new Solar Powered Integrated Inspection Facility Project. The US$30 million project will enhance inspection services and support Oman Customs with safe and efficient security measures as part of the Sultanate’s Oman Logistics Strategy. The inspection facilities will be spread across the 37,000 sqm of Terminal C and are expected to come online mid-2023. The use of solar power will reduce energy usage by about 5,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions a year. 

Authorities in the Macau Special Administrative Region have approved the commercialisation of ELUNATE® (fruquintinib). ELUNATE® gained its first approval in Mainland China by the National Medical Products Administration (“NMPA”) in September 2018 for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. It is estimated that more than 40,000 patients have benefited from this novel treatment since its launch. It is the first homegrown innovative oncology drug to be marketed in Macau based on NMPA approval.

A new wave of HUTCHMED innovation is also on the way. In January 2022, sovleplenib was granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation by the NMPA. The designation allows accelerated development of new drugs that treat life-threatening diseases or serious conditions which lack effective treatment options. Sovleplenib has demonstrated encouraging results in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (“ITP”), an autoimmune bleeding disorder that can often have a significant, multifaceted impact on patients’ health and quality of life. It is now being studied in a China Phase III trial on ITP, along with additional studies on lymphoma ongoing in China, the US and Europe.  

Northern Gas Networks is running a world-leading, first-of-its-kind, closed test to replace natural gas with 100% clean burning hydrogen. A disused area with a pipe network that previously supplied homes with gas will be closed off for the experiment. Similar to natural gas, an odourising agent will be added for extra safety. Hydrogen burns with zero emissions, making it a leading contender for helping the UK achieve its net-zero carbon emission targets for the nation.  

Hutchison Ports Thailand has signed a contract with Nawarat Patanakarn Public Company Limited to move forward on the final construction phase of Terminal D at Laem Chabang Port. This phase will see the build-out of an additional stacking area for dry and reefer containers, additional automated trucking gate lanes, an engineering workshop and an administration building. In three years’ time, the port will be able to support the movement of up to 3.5 million TEU a year.

The move to electric vehicles (EVs) is being shifted into high gear by UK Power Networks. The complexity of making the shift is a challenge as managers determine when, where and how vehicles can recharge. Royal Mail, Centrica and Uber now have over 6,000 EVs in the programme.  

Northumbrian Water has been awarded over £6 million in the second round of the Water Breakthrough Challenge, led by the UK’s water regulator, Ofwat. The funds will advance projects which will help to reduce leakage and enable innovation across the utilities sector. The award will flow to two separate projects: the National Leakage Research and Test Centre and Stream, an open data-sharing platform to improve collaborative research.

Fiddly SIM cards could soon be a thing of the past. 3 Austria has launched a mobile phone account that is a completely new subscription model for mobiles, with no contract and no SIM card. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has given CK Hutchison Group Telecom (CKHGT) permission to sell its UK tower assets to Cellnex for approximately €3.7 billion in cash and shares. Mr Canning Fok, CKHH Group Co-Managing Director says, “This deal unlocks value in our telecom assets to our shareholders, improves our operational efficiency and accelerates our 5G rollout, benefiting consumers across the UK. The UK towers are excellent assets and we now also have a terrific partner in the UK to help us take our network there to the next level.” The totality of the CKHGT-Cellnex agreement covers about €10 billion in tower assets in six countries and the sale of assets in five other countries (Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden) has been completed.  

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, formed in January by the merger between Hutchison 3 Indonesia and PT Indosat Tbk, will become Indonesia’s second largest mobile telecommunications firm with estimated annual revenues of approximately US$3 billion and US$6 billion in assets. This industrial heft will support increased investment in its technological and human infrastructure to provide better service and higher network speeds to customers across Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest nation by population.  

Hutchison Ports has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Energy Park (SPARK) to create a joint venture to manage and operate a dry port and a bonded logistics zone. These will sit at the heart of a dynamic energy, manufacturing and logistics zone, serving and energising both investment-driven and organically grown businesses in the surrounding area.

The Port of Felixstowe has claimed the crown for the biggest 5G deployment at a UK port. Internet of Things sensors have been deployed to empower predictive maintenance for quay cranes. Data are being shared with partners such as Cambridge University, who will use them to drive an algorithm that predicts equipment failure and allows for optimisation of maintenance schedules. This reliable and real-time data transmission will occur over the same network that is handling the manipulation of remote-control quay cranes.

UK Power Networks’ new Green Recovery programme is funding a range of “shovel-ready” projects to supercharge the UK’s march towards its Carbon Zero future. Over £66 million has been committed to supplying heat pumps for local authorities and communities. Eighty-six applications were approved for projects, including district heating for schools and communities, which will provide more efficient use of energy and reduce carbon footprints. The use of electric vehicles has also been promoted with software upgrades that enable a single substation to support up to 500 charging stations without the need for additional investment in hardware such as heavy cabling or new substations.

China’s National Reimbursement Drug List aims to make life-saving drugs accessible to citizens in Mainland China and has expanded the number of HUTCHMED medicines on the list. The latest to be included is SULANDA® (surufatinib), following its approval for the treatment of advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours. The increased caseload from the COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t slow them down during the measurement period in the first half of 2021. Ookla is the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analyses.

Hutchison Ports welcomes a new member to its global network: Hutchison Ports Delta II, a versatile Dutch terminal able to accommodate the world’s biggest ships. The port also works with smaller feeders and barges to serve the Dutch economy.

The Port of Felixstowe smashed through a new record by loading its 100 millionth container since it opened in 1967. The capacity of the Port is expanding as Berths 6, 7, 8 and 9 have completed or will complete the deepening of their facilities in the next two years to allow even bigger, more efficient ships to berth. Two hundred million TEUs – here we come!  

EDL opened Australia’s largest-ever hybrid microgrid power project, which now provides up to 85% of renewable energy in good weather conditions. The microgrid integrates wind, solar and thermal generation along with batteries to supply the Agnew Gold Mine with 99.99% reliable energy with, on average, 50–60% coming from renewable sources. It is the first in Australia to power a mine mostly with wind-generated electricity. But this is just the start; EDL plans to continue the hybrid renewable journey on this landmark project with the goal being to power the mine with 100% renewable energy.  

Northern Gas Networks has launched its East Coast Hydrogen Programme in partnership with Cadent and National Grid with an event at the House of Commons. East Coast Hydrogen aims to connect over 7GW of hydrogen production to supply up to 39,000 commercial and industrial sites along with up to 4.4 million homes. This could mark a huge improvement in the carbon impact incurred through heating homes, powering transport and meeting the needs of industries.   

Enerven, an SA Power Networks company, has won the Australian Construction Achievement Award. Their Zero Cost Energy Future project for SA Water saw Enerven design and build over 242GWh of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 34MWh of energy storage across 33 South Australia water sites in less than 24 months. This storage enables SA Water to manage their excess energy production and feed it back into the grid to achieve a zero-net outcome.

HK Electric has taken a major step forward in transitioning from coal to cleaner gas for the generation of electricity. The new gas-fired unit, L11, has adopted “combined-cycle gas turbine technology”, one of the most efficient, cleanest and most widely used methods for generating electricity from fossil fuels. It began supplying energy to the grid in November 2021. The installation of another gas-fired unit, L12, has begun and will further boost the company’s gas-fired generation capacity when commissioned.  

Hutchison Ports are looking into the future of Egyptian maritime logistics by signing an exclusive agreement with Egypt’s Ministry of Transport to study the expansion of two ports: one on the Mediterranean and one in the Gulf of Suez. Under the memorandum of understanding, they will examine the feasibility of investing in and operating a container terminal project in El-Dekheila Port and a multi-purpose terminal project in Sokhna Port.

Guangzhou Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Company (GAMECO) opened a new aircraft maintenance facility covering an area of over 98,000 square metres, with a roof big enough to accommodate six wide-body and five narrow-body aircraft under its capacious canopy. This increase in capacity will strengthen the Guangzhou airport economic zone as an important national centre for aircraft maintenance, helping China Southern Airlines’ fleet and supporting other customers in the region.

Indosat Ooredoo and PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia have agreed to merge their complementary Indonesian businesses with a total transaction value of US$6 billion. The merged company will be the archipelago nation’s second-biggest and world-class telecom and Internet giant with over US$3 billion in revenues. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison will have the financial and customer scale to invest even more into its network and deliver more value to customers and shareholders in Indonesia.

5G technology is coming to Sohar Port in Oman. Hutchison Ports Sohar has signed a memorandum of understanding with local telecoms firm Omantel and China’s Huawei to develop a proof of concept (PoC) study. The study will encompass two phases. The first will cover 5G-based video surveillance of port facilities and the use of artificial intelligence. The second phase will explore the use of handheld and push-to-talk devices to improve port operations. The PoC will support the national logistics aims of the ‘Oman Vision 2040’ programme.  

UK Power Networks will commit almost £1 million to upgrading the electricity grid to allow for renewable energy to be connected to the power grid for households in Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Wind and solar farms will be able to feed energy into the power system, reducing reliance on non-renewable sources. The ‘load blinding relays’ are like safety valves that help to monitor electricity.

3 Denmark has secured a wide swathe of radio bandwidth for the next 20 years after paying top dollar in a recent auction by the national regulator. The 3.5 GHz frequency ‘property’ will mean that 3 Denmark will be able to deliver a superior 5G service to its customers in the Scandinavian nation. It also secured bandwidth in other spectra that will bolster its current 4G and 5G services. Furthermore, its acquisitions in the 26 GHz band will empower its offerings in ultra-fast mmWave technology.

Hutchison Ports Yantian celebrated a new milestone as it moved its 200 millionth TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) in 2021. Yantian’s traffic defied a global slowdown in 2020, increasing its throughput by 2% year-on-year. From its humble beginnings in 1994, Hutchison Ports Yantian now serves one-third of the import and export trade for the workshop of the world, Guangdong province in Mainland China. This also encompasses one-quarter of all Sino-US trade. The port continues to invest to support continued growth arising from the increased TEU traffic.  

New Zealand’s EnviroWaste is setting a target of keeping concrete out of landfill by using an innovative process to recycle the vital building material to create various grades of aggregate. A new recovery and processing plant has been unveiled at its Bombay Resource Recovery facility in South Auckland. The company has a long history of innovative recycling including kerbside collection of recyclables, food scraps and glass recycling. The latest plant will help New Zealand to reduce the environmental impact of its current building boom by bringing old concrete into new projects and reducing the need to mine virgin sand and coarse aggregate.

Hutchison Ports is expanding to encompass a neighbouring deep-water quay in the Port of Rotterdam. It will acquire the 13 ship-to-shore gantry cranes and facilities currently owned by APM Terminals Rotterdam. The semi-detached houses, built near Gateshead, were officially opened in July by the former Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan. The houses will be models for hydrogen-heated homes, providing the least invasive and most cost-effective route to zero carbon home heating for a large proportion of UK homes in the future.

Freedom begets freedom and, in this case, freeports. In the wake of Brexit, the UK will create eight freeports – including the Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe and Harwich International. HUTCHMED welcomes the approval of Surufatinib for the treatment of non-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours. A 420-strong commercial team will now bring the drug – discovered and developed completely in-house – to doctors and patients across Mainland China to help fight cancer. It will be marketed under the brand name Sulanda®. The pharmaceutical innovator has also initiated a rolling submission of its New Drug Application to the US Food and Drug Administration.  

Hutchison Ports, in an online signing ceremony in February, committed to developing a new port in Jazan on the southern extremity of the west Saudi Arabian coast. The Jazan City Primary and Downstream Industries Port lies on the Belt and Road Initiative route and will play a vital role in the economies of southern Saudi Arabia and its neighbours in southern and eastern Africa. Commercial operation is expected to start in early 2022.

Northern Gas Networks is partnering with National Grid and others to create a £12.7 million closed-loop experimental system to test the use of hydrogen in support of the UK’s goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions. The multi-firm collaboration will receive an award of £9.07 million from Ofgem (the UK energy regulator) via their Network Innovation Competition.

Mining and plantation communities are benefiting from 3 Indonesia’s installation of Nokia’s Long-Term Evolution (LTE) base stations to deliver connectivity to remote areas in central Sulawesi. The transmission relay distribution system requires an extensive backhaul network to get communication in and out of these areas. Morowali residents and businesses alike will benefit from access to telephone and Internet services.

The ‘Oman Vision 2040’ plan will get a supercharge with the addition of plans to expand SOHAR Port and Freezone to accommodate next-generation mega vessels at a new container terminal. Hutchison Ports Sohar has signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for the expansion. In line with implementing state-of-the-art equipment at the port, eight remote-controlled hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes have been deployed, improving efficiency.

A £16.2 million upgrade discreetly installed under the legendary Leicester Square Gardens will see three major transformers replaced with cleaner and greener successors over a two-year period. CK Hutchison has agreed to sell its interests in its European tower assets and businesses to Cellnex Telecom for €10 billion in six transactions. These transactions will unlock the underlying value of its telecommunications division and realise a number of strategic and financial benefits for the Group, including acceleration in rolling out 5G across all of CK Hutchison Group Telecom’s networks as well as forming long-term ties with Cellnex that will serve the Group’s future passive infrastructure needs. Austria, Denmark and Ireland completed their transactions in December 2020 with the remaining countries looking to complete this year.  

CK Hutchison and Ooredoo sign an MOU, entering into negotiations to potentially combine their Indonesian telecommunications businesses, PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia and PT Indosat TBK. Both companies will proceed with negotiations on an exclusive basis until 30 April 2021.  

Breaking records is nothing new for Hutchison Ports Yantian, which once again broke a world record in September for its monthly throughput of over 1.46 million TEU. This breakthrough makes it the current highest total for a single terminal run by a port operator. Only one month ago, it broke the world record of 1.42 million TEU.

A new container terminal is in the works in Abu Qir as Hutchison Ports confirmed a US$730 million project with the Egyptian Navy that will connect a two-way highway to Alexandria and a national road network to Cairo. The first phase is expected to commence operations in 2022.

Husky Energy and Cenovus combined their businesses to become the third-largest Canadian oil and natural gas company. The combination will result in C$1.2 billion in cost and capital synergies, enhance free funds flow generation and deliver superior return opportunities for investors. Industry analysts forecast that, as no equity accounting is required as it will hold less than 20% of the combined company, CKHH will have less earnings exposure to low oil prices but much greater value if prices rise.

Two UK-based gas and power companies have been recognised for their ambitious work, receiving prestigious awards for their latest endeavours. Northern Gas Networks’ H21 hydrogen project was awarded the 2020 Pipeline Industries Guild Award for the best onshore pipeline concept. And UK Power Networks was named ‘Network of the Year’, taking the top prize at the annual Network Awards.

Copenhagen and Roskilde are the first spots to enjoy the beginning of 5G in Denmark for customers of 3 Denmark and those under the Oister brand. With this successful leap at the end of the year, the network will continue to expand and be made available to the whole country by 2022.

Husky Energy has achieved first oil in Saskatchewan at its Spruce Lake Central thermal project, and started gas production from the Liuhua 29-1 field in the South China Sea. A strong and steady stream of free cash flow is highly anticipated upon the completion of both ventures.

Northern Gas Networks received a £770,000 grant to link the Bradford Alternative Fuel Centre to the gas network which will, in turn, power the development of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling station. This funding from Ofgem will help the UK on its way towards reaching its decarbonisation goals, building on the green advantages of CNG as a fuel alternative.

Powercor opened two new depots, valued at A$10 million each, in Kyneton and Shepparton, Australia. These developments have replaced outdated facilities from the ’60s and ’70s, allowing its local workers an upgraded space to continue providing its services to their communities.
