Pipebot Patrol steals the show on TV
Northumbrian Water’s groundbreaking sewer robot, Pipebot Patrol, has made its television debut. The company’s “Bin the Wipe” campaign was featured during the prime-time slot, urging customers to stop sending “flushable” wipes down the toilet, which wreak havoc on pipes. While this detritus seems innocent enough, in reality, it can turn into troublesome clogging that causes horrendous floods and requires multi-million-pound repairs. Pipebot Patrol has been developed as an early-warning AI solution that sewer systems desperately need.
Imagine an autonomous robot, inspired by the likes of Wall-E, making its way through underground pipes on the prowl for blockages before they have the chance to ruin homes. The project reflects Northumbrian Water’s wider focus on innovation and proactive network management, bringing together expertise from across the business and its partners.
The idea for Pipebot Patrol came to fruition in 2023 during a conversation between Clive Surman-Wells, Northumbrian Water’s former Innovation Partnerships Manager, and Strategic Planning Manager, Adrian Lee.
“We don’t really know where [blockages] are or what they’re made of until they’ve already caused a flood,” says Mr Lee. After some consideration, Mr Surman-Wells pitched his initial idea of a robot that would patrol and proactively prevent these costly disasters. With the support of partners at Minicam and the University of Sheffield, they made his dream a reality.
It’s no surprise then that Pipebot Patrol has found itself under the spotlight, with Mr Surman-Wells and his colleague Simon Cyhanko (Head of Wastewater Networks) showing the machine on TV. The appearance showcased how new technology is being used to tackle long‑standing challenges in wastewater management.
“The true innovators aren’t the ones with the ideas; they’re the ones that make things happen,” Mr Surman Wells advises.
Mr Surman-Wells, who recently retired after more than two decades with the company, described watching the broadcast as a proud moment at the end of his time with Northumbrian Water.
Away from the spotlight and back at work, Pipebot Patrol continues its work beneath the streets, protecting homes, reducing disruption and keeping wastewater flowing smoothly, one pipe at a time.
