3 Hong Kong is driving the world beat

Happy Hong Kong’s beat was heard around the globe, thanks to 3 Hong Kong’s 5G network. 3 Hong Kong collaborated with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Drum Festival last October. As the 5G Strategic Partner for the event, 3 Hong Kong powered a 4K ultra-high-definition live streaming, bringing the captivating drum rhythms and the scenic beauty of the West Kowloon Cultural District to all parts of the world.

They said it couldn’t be done – “They” were wrong

3 Denmark defied all the experts who predicted that their 3G network company, launched in 2003 with precisely zero customers, was doomed to failure. Twenty years on, they are celebrating serving over 1.5 million personal and business Danish customers. They took over 11,000 of them from the competition in Q3 alone.

As if that wasn’t enough, their 5G network was named the “Most Consistent/Best Network Overall” in Denmark by telecommunications analysis agency Opensignal. They also came out on top for accessibility and upload and download speeds for a 5G network in Denmark.

3 UK helps to level up rural UK

3 UK has completed the construction of over 100 sites to help bring its national geographic 4G coverage to 90% of the country and to hit 95% coverage by all UK mobile network operators by 2026.

The Shared Rural Network (SRN) is a £1 billion programme supported by the mobile industry and the UK government that aims to improve connectivity in the UK’s most rural locations. Sixty-five of 3’s 100 SRN sites have been deployed across Scotland, providing coverage for 12,500 premises across nearly 2,000 square kilometres of the UK’s most remote locations.

3 Sweden has gone big by investing in the bandwidth it will need to best serve its customers. It has purchased 1.2 billion SEK (>US$115 million) to secure the spectrum needed for the next 25 years of telecommunications service in the 5G era and beyond. This retains the use of the mid-band spectrum as well as the lower band spectrum for future use.

Electric Picnic is Ireland’s biggest music festival and it is powered by 3 Ireland! The headline sponsor kept partygoers in touch as they rocked it out to headliners like Billie Eilish, The Killers, Wet Leg and Paulo Nutini. In 2023, the festival experienced a 92% increase in data usage by Three customers, including a ginormous 378% increase in 5G traffic. Three carried 40% of all data downloaded at the festival and partygoers made over 1.5 million calls and uploaded countless videos to social media to bring the festival to the world via the 3 Ireland network!

Hong Kong’s post-COVID-19 recovery has been replete with over-the-top events. The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra was brought to the world from live on board the cruise ship Resorts World One through 3 Hong Kong’s 5G technology. In support of the government’s Happy Hong Kong programme, the event was Hong Kong’s first-ever live boat-based broadcast from a cruise ship at sea. The Chinese music could be appreciated by people on the high seas and around the world!

From Austria to Ireland, Ookla says 3 beats the rest for speed. Ookla, the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis, presents its annual Speedtest awards every year. For the third year in a row, Drei Austria has been deemed the fastest 5G network in Austria. It celebrated with an ad campaign that treated German speakers to witty wordplay to highlight the win. 3 Ireland won its national contest for the fastest network for a fourth year in a row and the quickest 5G network for a third time.

Wind Tre has partnered with iliad in a 50/50 joint venture to manage and accelerate mobile network coverage to people in rural areas in Italy. With relevant government ministry approvals in hand, they are poised to provide 5G and ultra-broadband services to 26.8% of Italians that live in these areas. The new joint venture is named Zefiro Net S.r.l. This is very appropriate for “Wind” Tre; zefiro in Italian means “zephyr” in English: a soft gentle breeze.

Busting out the bandwidth for Hong Kong’s 25th

3 Hong Kong is leading among telco operators as the first to announce the activation of 700MHz band spectrum mobile phone base stations. This wavelength of spectrum allows for ultra-strong penetration providing 5G coverage. It means better coverage in both less densely populated rural areas and urban areas with intense building coverage. The base stations were activated at midnight on 30 June to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997.

Green light for UK tower assets deal

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has given CK Hutchison Group Telecom (CKHGT) permission to sell its UK tower assets to Cellnex for approximately €3.7 billion in cash and shares. Mr Canning Fok, CKHH Group Co-Managing Director says, “This deal unlocks value in our telecom assets to our shareholders, improves our operational efficiency and accelerates our 5G rollout, benefiting consumers across the UK. The UK towers are excellent assets and we now also have a terrific partner in the UK to help us take our network there to the next level.” The totality of the CKHGT-Cellnex agreement covers about €10 billion in tower assets in six countries and the sale of assets in five other countries (Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden) has been completed.

Port of Felixstowe leads 5G deployment in the UK

The Port of Felixstowe has claimed the crown for the biggest 5G deployment at a UK port. Internet of Things sensors have been deployed to empower predictive maintenance for quay cranes. Data are being shared with partners such as Cambridge University, who will use them to drive an algorithm that predicts equipment failure and allows for optimisation of maintenance schedules. This reliable and real-time data transmission will occur over the same network that is handling the manipulation of remote-control quay cranes.

The increased caseload from the COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t slow them down during the measurement period in the first half of 2021. Hong Kong transported the “Universe in a Flower” to Buddhists around the world using 5G 4K live streaming technology. The majestic music of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the stunning backdrop of Tsz Shan Monastery and spiritual rituals elevated those joining the concert in their religious observance. 3 Hong Kong also distributed a 3D lotus hologram device so that adherents could project the image and their prayers to the cosmos during the flower-offering ceremony.

3 Sweden’s 5G Sustainability Awards bestows cash grants, technical support and business training to start-ups developing solutions that use 5G to drive social and environmental sustainability in Sweden. Winners this year included top-spot Buddywise (an AI solution to detect hazards, accidents and illness for safer workplaces), Consenz (adapting old cars with modern safety standards features), and Dronest (drones that deliver images of accidents to inbound first responders for pre-arrival preparation). The winners receive cash, start-up capital, coaching from experts at 3 Sweden, office space in 3Huset at Avicii Arena in Stockholm and technical equipment.

Beyond Telecoms: 3 Hong Kong becomes THE 5G leader

The star-studded celebrity event to launch 3 Hong Kong’s Passion beyond Imagination non-fungible token (NFT) art and 3’s rapidly expanding 5G network, were in the spotlight. Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings (HTHKH) has invested over HK$3 billion since 2019 to expand its mobile network and develop 5G. Many 3.5 GHz 5G ‘golden spectrum’ base stations have been deployed – more than any other provider in town – to the delight of customers enjoying super-high speed and ultra-low latency. Building Ports of the Future in Oman

5G technology is coming to Sohar Port in Oman. Hutchison Ports Sohar has signed a memorandum of understanding with local telecoms firm Omantel and China’s Huawei to develop a proof of concept (PoC) study. The study will encompass two phases. The first will cover 5G-based video surveillance of port facilities and the use of artificial intelligence. The second phase will explore the use of handheld and push-to-talk devices to improve port operations. The PoC will support the national logistics aims of the ‘Oman Vision 2040’ programme.

3 Denmark has secured a wide swathe of radio bandwidth for the next 20 years after paying top dollar in a recent auction by the national regulator. The 3.5 GHz frequency ‘property’ will mean that 3 Denmark will be able to deliver a superior 5G service to its customers in the Scandinavian nation. It also secured bandwidth in other spectra that will bolster its current 4G and 5G services. Furthermore, its acquisitions in the 26 GHz band will empower its offerings in ultra-fast mmWave technology.

CK Hutchison inks €10 billion tower asset deal with Cellnex

CK Hutchison has agreed to sell its interests in its European tower assets and businesses to Cellnex Telecom for €10 billion in six transactions. These transactions will unlock the underlying value of its telecommunications division and realise a number of strategic and financial benefits for the Group, including acceleration in rolling out 5G across all of CK Hutchison Group Telecom’s networks as well as forming long-term ties with Cellnex that will serve the Group’s future passive infrastructure needs. Austria, Denmark and Ireland completed their transactions in December 2020 with the remaining countries looking to complete this year.
